Bright and colourful, is one way of describing the citrus colours of the GT Beetle. Available in Tomato Red, Lemon Yellow and Apple Green, these caras were the epitome of 70's brash!
This particular car is owned by Con Kennedy and was once reputed to have taken on a BMW Z3 on the way to Carlow.....and won! |

We interviewed Con about his car.
How did you get interested in VW's?
"By chance! Prior to owning the GT, my mode of transport was by mountain bike. I lived in town and worked in town, so wning a car never came into the equation....until the company I worked for moved out to Dún Laoghaire. In one our our many Friday nights in the Shelbourne Bar, my boss brought up the subject of commting, as I was the ony one in the company who did not drive, he proposed that if I "found the car" he would pay for my tax and insurance! I had a long hard think about it and some where in my head I head a voice saying "You need a VW."

How often do you get to drive your GT?
"I have to say, no where near as much as I'd like. It's been 8 years since I worked in Dún Laoghaire where I drove it every day and when I moved to another Design Agency in Mountjoy Square I contuned to drive it every day. Now I work in Grand Canal Dock, and It is far easier, quicker and economical to use the train."

Are there any differences between driving after a GT as opposed to a regular beetle?
"Well, with the 1600 engine and the high ratio box, there certainly is a lot more poke than your 'standard' beetle, but at the end of the day it Is a beetle and though its supposed to be the sporty model, it is sporty, but with a small 's' "
