The Hunt for Old Volkswagens.
Over the many years that I've been into Vee dubs, I've seen loads.
They've been in gardens, sheds, you name it! I even seen on ontop of apole!
But for this story we will keep it with the one's that rest in gardens, For most of us who own and love the VW Beetle, to own and old one, be it a split or oval, would be the dogs!
So here goes, one day while driving the bug, a good clean and detail in the driveway, I heard a voice from behind me saying "I know where there's a beetle, its the one with the split window in the back:...
Well, quicker than you could blink I got out of the car and was over to get some more info from this chap who was standing at the end of the driveway. "Really?", I said, "and where would it be?", "This old lady has it, its been in her garden for years: He said, "She lived down in Wicklow" and he gave me her addrress.
Then, he went on to tell me some of his own stories on the Beetle's that he had owned since the early 1950's. Thinks like trips they went on and how him and his friends did all their own work on them and no matter where you went in a bug, people waved at each other if they were driving a VW.
Remember that's all they were called back then.
So any way, after a good amount of time had passed he way on his way and I finished detailing the bug. So later on when I was talking to Mick, I asked if he knew where the address of the old lady was as his Gran lived in Wicklow. Mick had a good idea where it was so we pulled in to his old house a bit down the road, there was no VW there either. I think the woman of the house told us that there was an old little black car up in the other house for years, but it was taken away a few days earlier.
So, we went back up to the other house that we thought it was in and had a closer look in the garden.
We could see the spot that the bug had rested in for so many years. With four wheel imprints in the garden and the patch of dead grass was all that was left of the splitty. We were too late and it was gone!
And so, the the chance to own an old one had once again slipped away. But we live in hope that once day it will happen.
Mahokie's view: "Should have got there earlier" |
